Why i blended geranium and frankincense for the car

A steady, grounding blend for calm focus on the move.

There’s something about being in the car that can quietly turn the volume up on our stress levels.

Traffic. Noise. Concentration. Time pressure. The constant decision making.

Even when we don’t feel anxious, our bodies can still respond. Shoulders start creeping up, jaw tightening, breathing becomes shallow. That’s exactly why I love aromatherapy for the car: not to “switch off”, but to feel a little more steady and supported while staying fully present.

This is the story and the reasoning behind my Geranium & Frankincense car diffuser blend.

Why I wanted a “calm but alert” driving blend

For me, aromatherapy in the car is deeply personal.

After I had an stress-induced seizure, I couldn’t drive for two years. When I eventually returned to driving, I realised I felt anxious.

Essential oils became part of how I rebuilt confidence behind the wheel. I didn’t want anything that made me feel sleepy or disconnected. I wanted to feel calm, grounded, and capable.

Over time, scent became linked with safety again, that’s the heart behind these blends.

Pelargonium graveolens (geranium) is one of those essential oils that feels like it helps bring your internal world back into balance.

In classical aromatherapy texts, geranium is described as emotionally harmonising and versatile — a gentle support when feelings feel heightened or unsettled. Authors such as Battaglia (The Complete Guide to Aromatherapy) and Tisserand & Young (Essential Oil Safety) highlight its traditional use in supporting emotional wellbeing.

Chemically, geranium is rich in citronellol and geraniol, chemical compounds often associated in aromatherapy with uplifting and regulating qualities.

A recent study reported that inhalation of Pelargonium graveolens essential oil was associated with reductions in self-reported anxiety and stress in adults experiencing moderate discomfort.¹

While essential oils are not medicines and research continues to evolve, these findings sit comfortably alongside its traditional use for emotional steadiness.

In practice, I reach for geranium when someone feels:

  • Frazzled but still functioning

  • Emotionally stretched

  • A little reactive

  • In need of a gentle internal reset

And importantly for a car blend: geranium is balancing rather than sedating.
