Below are some of the most effective and widely used essential oils for supporting menopausal symptoms. Now it’s important to know that aromatherapy is a traditional and complementary medicine. It’s not alternative. That means, all the suggestions here are to inspire you to welcome these essential oils into your life alongside your GP’s advice. 

1. Clary Sage (Salvia Sclarea)
Often referred to as the “women’s oil”, clary sage is one of the most important essential oils for menopause.
Clary sage contains naturally occurring phytoestrogen-like compounds that support the endocrine system during hormonal change.
2. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
Lavender is one of the most researched essential oils and is invaluable during menopause.
3. Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
Geranium is a beautiful balancing oil for both hormones and emotions.
4. Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
Frankincense is deeply grounding and supportive during times of transition.
5. Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
Ylang ylang can be helpful for emotional wellbeing and libido.

It’s important to know that aromatherapy is so  personal, it’s not a one size fits-all situation. You may really like the smell of one oil, but really dislike another – that’s why I love to host workshops, so you can really find what works for you and create your own products, safely.

How to Use Essential Oils Safely During Menopause

Essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be used correctly.

General safety guidelines:

  • Always dilute essential oils before applying to skin

  • Perform a patch test before first use

  • Avoid use if you have hormone-sensitive conditions unless advised by a qualified aromatherapist

  • If you are on medication or under medical care, seek professional advice

  • Keep oils away from eyes and mucous membranes
